Abstract
This research study deals with the development of the teaching and learning process of the mathematics subject in the Second year of the Basic General Education Elementary Level. For the purpose of this investigation we focus on learning the addition (or sum), for this we set out in coordination with the tutor as a fundamental objective to investigate how the implementation of the Regletas de Cuisenaire intervenes in the addition learning of the students of the Second year of EGB of the Educational Unit of “April 16” period of 2019-2020. This was approached from a qualitative methodological approach, using interactive techniques and instruments necessary for data collection such as the interview through a teacher's question guide and a diagnostic test and final test through the questionnaire applied to students and the analysis of teaching and learning process tasks assessed based on the observation sheet. The initial results show that there is a teaching practice with conventional methods with repetitive strategies that emphasizes the transmission of information using markers, blackboard and school textbook. In this perspective, the understanding of the concepts and processes of basic operations is neglected. As a strategic alternative, the use of Cuisenaire strips has been implemented and an improvement in student learning has been achieved, reflected in the final test scores and observed in the process evaluation through observation sheets. It is important to emphasize that the teaching-learning of mathematics at the level of basic education is of paramount importance to lay the foundations that children need to consolidate their learning in the future. Finally, the use of Cuisenaire strips for the teaching of mathematics in Basic General Education is recommended.
