Abstract
This research focuses on the problems of literacy development presented by a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who attends the Psychopedagogical Center UDIPSAI and studies at the Octavio Cordero Palacios Educational Unit, in the city of Cuenca. Based on the identified problem, the general objective is to propose a system of musical play activities that contribute to the teaching and learning of reading and writing in a student with ASD. Authors who define what ASD is, the theories, characteristics, the school context and the literacy processes are addressed. In addition, several authors support the relationship between music and language and the benefits of the application of musicality in children with ASD. The research is developed from the interpretative paradigm and a qualitative approach. In addition, the case study methodology is applied, conformed by the aforementioned student with ASD diagnosis. Data collection techniques were selected such as: interview, observation and document analysis, whose results were triangulated. In order to contribute to the teaching and learning of literacy of the child with ASD, a system of musical play activities was designed to meet the student’s needs. A part of the proposal was implemented, resulting in the student’s interest and motivation to learn. Thus, it is concluded that this system of activities will support the student in his reading and writing process.
