Abstract
Developing mathematical skills and abilities in basic education is important and essential since they are the foundations on which new mathematical knowledge will be built. The basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) are forms of calculation that are present in the daily life and are of vital importance to live in a globalized society of constant changes. During the pre-professional practices carried out in the Unidad Educativa “Luis Cordero” (2019-2020 school year), specifically in the fifth year of EGB, parallel "B", we conducted participant observation sessions and were able to record the existence of flaws in the resolution of exercises with combined operations. For this reason, this research work is a unique case study that aims to contribute knowledge to address the problem; specifically an action plan is implemented using collaborative learning. It has been decided to use collaborative learning because of its impact on obtaining knowledge, the development of necessary skills and also because it allows the modification of inappropriate behaviors when it is part of a teaching-learning process. The research method that prevailed was Participatory Action Research. The results found after the work sessions were satisfactory, a significant change in the development and mastery of mathematical skills was corroborated by pre and post research tests. Therefore, work is a contribution to the teaching of mathematics by employing work sessions and verifying its effectiveness in the study of a specific subject.
