Abstract
The objective of this study is to publicize the use of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication System, which is intended to stimulate the non-verbal communication of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), through the Pictographic Communication System (SPC). The present research arises during the pre-professional practices which, through participant observation, were developed in the Special Educational Unit “Agustín Cueva Tamariz”, located in the city of Cuenca, in the 7th year of education, of the autism program. Within the unit of analysis, the work with a student is evident, who does not present an effective way of communicating, because he does not have verbal language, because he has not uttered any words until he was 12 years old, however, he tries to interacting through the student's own gestures, in this way avoiding participating with their environment, generating difficulties when communicating their needs and concerns. The approach used in this research is a case study, with the present hermeneutical paradigm; Therefore, different techniques were used such as: participant observation, field diaries, semi-structured interviews and data triangulation. The use of these documents allows us to corroborate the language difficulties, strengths and ways of working that the students present. As a general conclusion, it can be said that the pedagogical intervention proposal presented in this study is significant, since it constitutes one of the fundamental objectives of this research. Its purpose is to address the communication difficulties and needs of the case studied, in order to create a resource or support material that allows the student to interact constantly in various environments both in the educational, family and social spheres, stimulating participation and Personal development.
