Abstract
Didactic planning should focus on developing competencies in students to generate meaningful and useful learning for their development in the context in which they live. In this context, the following question was posed: How do good teachers adapt the established planning to what a student really need to learn? To answer this question, the professional performance of five teachers of excellence in the provinces of Azuay and Cañar, who obtained the maximum score in the Ser maestro test, that is, 950 points or more, was studied. The research design is descriptiveanalytical, with an ethnographic approach. Interviews were conducted to gather information; the results indicate that planning means forgetting what one wants to teach, and focus on what student need to learn..
