Abstract
The present work was oriented towards the design of a "Cartilla de Saberes y Conocimientos Ancestrales" (Booklet of Ancestral Knowledge) of the Salasaka community, involving first-year students from the Intercultural Bilingual Educational Unit “Manzanapamba”. Data collection took place in the community of Manzanapamba Chico, belonging to the Salasaca people, in the Pelileo canton, city of Ambato, specifically at the U.E.I.B Manzanapamba. Although this institution is intercultural and bilingual, there is not enough didactic material for teaching the Kichwa language. Hence, the question arises: "How to teach the Kichwa language using the ancestral knowledge of the Salasaka community in the insertion into the semiotic processes of first-year students at the U.E.I.B 'Manzanapamba'?" The present investigation follows a qualitative approach and is based on participant observation, allowing the use of various tools to gain a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the studied practices. Among the employed tools, field diaries played a prominent role. Furthermore, to enrich the analysis and gain a deep understanding of the perspectives of involved actors, interviews were conducted with teachers, students, parents, and community members. Regarding the creation of the booklet, a participatory approach was chosen, involving first-year students at the U.E.I.B. This decision was based on the need to work with this age group, as they are in a crucial stage of their cognitive and semiotic development. The active involvement of the students in the design of the booklet ensured that its content and format were suitable and appealing for their learning and development By directly observing the design process alongside the students, the teachers were able to recognize the educational and cultural potential of the booklet, reinforcing the importance of making the knowledge and traditions of the community visible within the educational context. The fact that the booklet can be used in different educational levels not only increases its reach and usefulness but also allows for a broader dissemination of ancestral knowledge and practices, enriching the learning experience for students at all levels.
