Abstract
The main objective of this research is to propose a protocol for the safe introduction of assistance dogs in the inclusive educational care of autistic students of the Educational Unit “Quito Luz de America”, in the Canton of Palora, in the province of Morona Santiago. The research focuses on the need for a structured approach to ensure the assistance of these students in their educational process, particularly with the assistance of dogs. The methodology of the study adopts a qualitative approach. Methods and techniques such as documentary analysis, direct observation, interviews with educators and therapists were used to assess the relevance and feasibility of a protocol for the introduction of assistance dogs as a complementary alternative in the inclusive educational care of these students. The results indicate that the introduction of assistance dogs can offer benefits for students with autism, such as improvements in communication, socialization and emotional well-being. Challenges were also identified, such as the need for adaptation of the dogs to the school environment and staff training to ensure the safety and well-being of both students and animals. It is concluded that the protocol proposed, with criteria for the selection of the dogs, training procedures and measures to ensure the assistance of the dogs in the educational process developed with these students, may be appropriate as part of the efforts made in the institution to ensure the educational inclusion of these students.
