Abstract
The development of literacy skills in people with Down syndrome constitutes a great challenge for teachers and students, being essential to take into account their individual characteristics such as: the pace of learning, strengths and weaknesses of each child, among others; in order to provide them with the appropriate support for their needs. Although Down syndrome has no cure because it is not a disease, but rather a genetic dysfunction of chromosome 21, it is possible to optimize cognitive and behavioral skills in them; In this way, the present work has as main objective to stimulate the development of reading and writing skills in students with Down syndrome. The present research work used an interpretative paradigm, with a qualitative approach, the method used is a case study. The techniques used were: participant observation, interview, documentary analysis and the instruments used in correspondence with the techniques. The data obtained through the instruments were analyzed through triangulation, resulting in the case studied not having developed literacy skills. In this way, a system of diversified activities is proposed using the Troncoso method, that through the application of the stages in both reading and writing, the teaching-learning processes are strengthened, improving their literacy skills so that It will allow the student to interact with the environment, strengthen their autonomy, and this in turn will contribute to a truly inclusive education.
